Leap Castle, Co. Offaly, Ireland
Leap Castle is an Irish castle in County Offaly, about four miles north of the town of Roscrea on the R421. The castle was built in 1250. Many people were imprisoned and executed in the castle.
Around 20 spirits are known to roam the Irish castle. The most interesting of these beings is a small hunched creature which many believe is an elemental. It is known to attack viciously if provoked. The dungeon, which was discovered around 1900 by workmen, was filled with skeletons piled on top of one another. There are spikes at the bottom of this shaft, and when workers were cleaning it out, it took them three cartloads to carry out all the human bones at the bottom. The castle is also home to the ‘Bloody Chapel’, where a warrior is reported to have killed his brother over the alter and a ghostly priest who is also seen running past the chapel door.
TV shows like The Most Haunted and TAPS team have both conducted investigations here. It’s a very scary place and not for the faint of heart. The castle is not open to the public at this time.
